While the "Greater German Reich" was moving toward its inevitable end under the blows of the anti-Hitler coalition, the leadership of the Third Reich tried to bring its loot to safety. These activities were called "wartime relocations". Many treasures were moved mainly to Germany and Austria. At the end of the war there was the Schickedanz Plan, whose specific content - the locations to which Nazi-looted art had been moved - was known to only a few people. A large number of storage sites were discovered by the Allies for various reasons. In current discussions about this period and the subject of looted art, the Amber Room plays a particularly important role. Many a treasure still lies hidden and awaits discovery. Efforts to find such objects - provided they have a realistic prospect of success - will receive stronger support in the future. Surely some hidden things will still come to light. Author Gert Dieter Schmidt (Berlin) follows the traces of a number of treasure hunters and offers many indications of which leads deserve more thorough investigation.
